Psychological and Educational Assessments

What is a Psychoeducational assessment?

Psychoeducational assessment is a comprehensive individual assessment that involves gathering developmental, family, school, social, emotional, temperament and health histories, administering tests and interpreting results. The goal of this kind of assessment is to learn about a child’s abilities, including skills that a child has developed and learned, plus areas that the child may have difficulty.

A Psychoeducational assessment is comprised of at least two types of testing; psychological and educational testing. Psychological tests measure cognitive abilities such as:

Attention
Memory
Auditory and Visual processing
Language skills
Eye-hand coordination
Planning ability
Verbal reasoning
Perceptual and Spatial skills

Educational tests measure academic skills such as:

Reading
Written expression
Spelling
Mathematics
Academic fluency (speed of reading, writing and calculating)
Listening comprehension
Oral expressive skills

These assessments help to evaluate your child’s strengths and weaknesses.

Why is a Psychoeducational assessment necessary?

The term psycho-educational assessment can sound intimidating, however the majority of children and teens describe the tests as “challenging but fun”.

We also provide assessments for adults with attention and learning problems as well as depression, anxiety and other psychological difficulties.

Which tests are used?

A psychoeducational assessment uses a range of psychological and educational tests. We use a number of standard tests including those appropriate for funding applications such as the WISC-IV, the WPPSI and the WIAT.

Psychoeducational assessments and Autism Spectrum Disorder

The Listen And Learn Centre assesses and treats many children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Psychoeducational assessments for these children may differ from regular psychoeducational assessments. Psychoeducational assessment for children with an ASD involves the use of the Psychoeducational Profile Revised (PEP-R), Vineland, CARS, ADI-R, ADOS, Asperger’s questionnaires and other assessment tools. These assessment tools cover a wide range of developmental areas such as motor skills, cognitive abilities communication and behaviours. These tests can also be used as an educational tool for planning individualized special educational programs.
