Parenting Program & Challenging Behaviour Modification and Management Program for Children

Disruptive and antisocial behaviour is not unusual in childhood development. However, if this behaviour continues frequently then a child’s academic, emotional and social development may be at risk. Without early intervention, this may start to impact on peers, family and the broader community. Mental health professionals are increasingly using early intervention strategies to target early signs of challenging behaviour before they reach a point of significantly interfering with a child’s development.

Parenting Program

The Listen And Learn Centre provides a Behaviour Management Program for parents of children with challenging behaviours. This is a flexible program of 1 ½ hour sessions over 6 weeks which aims to strengthen parents’ skills in boundary setting, and to foster positive self-esteem in their children. The program is based on behavioural family therapy which is recognised as one of the most widely used and empirically supported therapeutic interventions for children and families. The main principles of this approach are to support parents to develop a more positive discipline style, and to promote positive parent-child interactions and relationships. Sessions use a workshop format and cover a range of topics including rewards and praise-giving, family rules and consequences, managing sibling conflict and strong emotions, communication styles, coping skills and the program is tailored to address the needs of the child and the family.

Children's Program

The Listen And Learn Centre provides a Behaviour Management Program for Children based on similar principles to the Parenting Program. This program emphasises children’s strengths and addresses their social and problem solving skills with an emphasis on building emotional self-regulation. The program is presented as eight 45-minute workshops covering a range of topics including creating and adhering to group rules, identifying feelings, managing anger, problem solving strategies, generating assertive responses and cooperating in groups. The Parents and Children’s program are complimentary programs can be run simultaneously, with parents and siblings partaking in their respective groups.
